Someone Stole my Digital image what rights do I have?

I created a logo for a guy. I was going to work on creating him a website. I wanted to show him the work I could do. I didn't register the image with the copyright office because with all the images I make that would be very costly and I heard from a friend that if its a digital work you own the copyright the second that is created. The guy said he didn't like the mock up site I created and now a year later its his main logo on his website and he posts ads all over craigslist with the logo I created. Was my friend right that I have ownership still even without registering it or am I screwed? I have the original digital copy of the image and the create date in properties. I also have a friend who was the one who introduced me to this guy that I sent the image to that seen the final copy I sent to the guy I also have it uploaded to my private space on comcast with the same date as the create date.
